Marsaxlokk Market

If you’re looking for a taste of authentic Maltese culture and a colorful, bustling atmosphere, Marsaxlokk is the place to be. This picturesque fishing village, located on the southeastern coast of Malta, is renowned for its Sunday market, a vibrant extravaganza that brings locals and tourists together to celebrate the island’s rich traditions.

One of the market’s most prominent features is the plethora of fishing boats that adorn the bay. Known as “luzzus,” these traditional Maltese fishing vessels are adorned with brightly colored eye symbols, believed to protect the fishermen from evil spirits.

While the market operates on other days of the week as well, it’s on Sundays that it truly comes to life. To buy fresh fish, I recommend you to be there before 10 am otherwise it will be sold out.

Also, Marsaxlokk is easy to reach but keep in mind the traffic, especially in the morning. To avoid the traffic you can take the direct bus from Valletta (Bus 81, which departs from platform A6). I really recommend taking the bus from Valletta since getting onto the bus on the route might be impossible, especially during high season.

For food enthusiasts, Marsaxlokk’s Sunday market is a true paradise. You can savor freshly grilled fish at one of the many seafood restaurants lining the harbor. In other words, a great place to have lunch and explore the market in the morning!
